ILO says Croatian monthly salary is 1,756 on PPP basis

ZAGREB, March 30 (Hina) - The average Croatian wage is $1,756 according to the purchasing power parity (PPP), nearly $300 more than the average wage in the world but twice below the US wage, the BBC said on Thursday citing the International Labour Organisation's report on world salaries for 2010-11.

The PPP dollar is a specially designed calculation unit. One PPP dollar is equal to $1 spent in the US. "Another way of putting it is that the conversion to PPP dollars expresses how much it would cost you in the US to get the equivalent goods and services you can buy with your salary locally," the BBC said.

The world's average salary in PPP dollars, according to the ILO, is $1,480 a month.

According to the average PPP monthly salary, Croatia is ranked 27th among the 72 countries covered by the ILO report.

Some European Union countries are ranked lower than Croatia - Slovakia ($1,385), Hungary ($1,374), Estonia ($1,276), Lithuania ($1,109), Romania ($954) and Bulgaria ($750).

The average PPP monthly salary in Bosnia and Herzegovina is $1,338, in Serbia it is $1,058, while Slovenia's was not calculated.

Luxembourg has the highest average PPP monthly salary ($4,089), followed by Norway ($3,678), Austria ($3,437), the US ($3,263) and Great Britain ($3,065).

The Philippines is at the bottom of the ranking with $279, followed by Pakistan with $255 and Tajikistan with $227.
