WWF restoring fish-ponds in Kopacki Rit Nature Park

ZAGREB, March 31 (Hina) - The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) is restoring 570 hectares of wetland in eastern Croatia's Kopacki Rit Nature Park through its "Wetland restoration in the Mura-Drava-Danube area" project.

The local fish-ponds were abandoned several years ago, the wetland has become overgrown, its functions and worth have been reduced, which has had a negative effect on biodiversity, the WWF said in a statement on Monday, adding that restoration would make the area again an area where rare and endangered species can feed, rest and breed.

The restoration of the wetland at the Podunavlje fish-pond near Kopacevo began in 2011 and continues this year.

The project involves the Environment and Nature Protection Ministry, the Agricultural Ministry, the Regional Development Ministry, European Union funds, Croatia's Hrvatske Vode water management company, Bilje Municipality, Kopacki Rit, and The Coca-Cola Company.

A declaration has also been prepared to be signed by all relevant parties so as to ensure continued care for the wetland in question.

The fish-pond restoration will enable fish-growing, which will be beneficial for the local population and have a positive effect on the socioeconomic situation in the region, the WWF said.
