President visits national weather service

ZAGREB, March 23 (Hina) - On the occasion of World Meteorological Day, President Ivo Josipovic on Friday visited the national Meteorological and Hydrological Service (DHMZ) and said it was important to consider what would happen to the climate in the next 50 or 100 years and adapt the development system and strategy to the changes.

"I think we are underestimating the story with climate changes. They will impact not only temperature but also waters, agriculture, the biosphere, tourism and our lives," said the president.

He said that if the development system and strategy were not adapted to the climate changes, the consequences would be dramatic.

He said the DHMZ's results were great, despite unfavourable conditions.

World Meteorological Day is observed in memory of 23 March 1950, when the World Meteorological Organisation was officially founded. This UN body has 185 member countries. Croatia became a member in November 1992, although it had collaborated it since its establishment.
