EP asks Serbia not to organise local elections in Kosovo

BRUSSELS, March 29 (Hina) - Members of the European Parliament on Thursday adopted a progress resolution on Serbia asking that a date for the start of accession negotiations be set as soon as possible and calling on Belgrade not to organise local elections in north Kosovo and to implement what was agreed in dialogue with Pristina.

In the legally non-binding document adopted at a plenary session in Brussels, the MEPs said the European Union entry talks should begin as soon as possible to show the EU's commitment to Serbia's European prospects.

At the proposal of the parliamentary rapporteur on Serbia, Slovenian Liberal Jelko Kacin, the MEPs adopted an amendment saying that calling local elections in Kosovo would be in contravention of international law and UN Security Council Resolution 1244.

The EP voiced concern about the violence in Kosovo late last year, calling on Belgrade to apply all agreements reached in dialogue with Kosovo and, among other things, to remove the remaining barricades and ensure free access to the Serbian-Kosovo border crossings.

The resolution highlights the importance of good relations with all neighbours.

With a majority vote, MEPs adopted a progress resolution on Kosovo stressing that its future was also in the EU, although five member countries have still not recognise it. The resolution calls on the five countries - Spain, Slovakia, Romania, Greece and Cyprus - to recognise Kosovo's independence, and asks that Kosovo be enabled to participate in the Olympics.
