Japan donates funds for five projects in Croatia

ZAGREB, March 21 (Hina) - The Japanese government has donated 164,000 euros for five projects in Croatia, and Japanese Ambassador Masaru Tsuji signed four deeds of donation in Zagreb on Wednesday, the Japanese Embassy said in a statement.

The donations will be used for equipment for a centre for elderly people, a school, outpatient clinics, and playgrounds, and for a mine removal project. The deed of donation for the mine removal project will be signed on March 27.

Donji Lapac Municipality received 16,629 euros to equip the day-care centre for elderly and infirm persons. The primary school in Velika Pisanica, which is attended by pupils of multiethnic backgrounds, received 13,139 euros to improve the education environment and encourage ethnic reintegration. EUR 16,015 will go towards equipment for playgrounds in Slavonski Kobas, Trnjanski Kuti, Brestovac and Zakorenje to increase children's safety and keep them away from nearby minefields. EUR 38,691 will be used to purchase new equipment for the outpatient clinics in Dalj and Erdut to improve the health care of people in the war-affected area and speed up the process of refugee return and reintegration.

The mine removal project is worth 80,000 euros, which will be used to clear some 55,000 square metres of land in the Lipik area of mines left over from the 1991-1995 war in order to improve public safety and encourage the development of the local community.

The Japanese government has been implementing its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGHSP) programme since 1998 to help in the post-war recovery of Croatia. It has financially supported 97 projects, donating over 5 million euros in total.
