U.N. SPECIAL ENVOY AND BOSNIAN PRESIDENT MEET IN SPLIT

SPLIT, Dec 16 (Hina) - UN special envoy Yasushi Akashi and Bosnian president Alija Izetbegovic today met in the southern Croatian city of Split. Following the two-hour talks at Split airport, Izetbegovic said they discussed a ceasefire in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Izetbegovic insisted a ceasefire should first be achieved in the western Moslem-held enclave of Bihac, which should be followed by a three-month ceasefire throughout the country. He added that any longer ceasefire would freeze the status quo, which would be unacceptable. Speaking of a call by Bosnian Serb authorities to former US president Jimmy Carter to mediate in Bosnia peace talks, Izetbegovic said it would be a waste of time if it were aimed at changing the five-power Contact Group plan. Akashi said that the talks with Izetbegovic were very useful and that his objections would be included in a draft ceasefire agreement and offered to Bosnian Serbs for consideration.
