SARAJEVO, Dec 15 (Hina) - UN Protection Force officials in Sarajevo
were suprised with both the latest Bosnian Serb leader Radovan
Karadzic's "peace proposal", and with the annoucement that former
U.S. president Jimmy Carter would be included in peace talks.
Karadzic's "peace proposal", revealed in phone interview with
the CNN network, includes six points - among them an 'urgent
cease-fire' in Sarajevo.
The proposals were not discussed yesterday during talks
between Karadzic and UN special envoy Yasushi Akashi, UNPROFOR's
deputy chief in Bosnia, Colum Murphy said.
He warned that little could be expected from Karadzic's
proposals.
Murphy said yesterday's talks concluded in a "suprisingly
positive atmosphere".
Akashi warned Karadzic if Bosnian Serbs continued to detain UN
peace keepers, Akashi would recommend to the UN General Secretary
that UNPROFOR troops be withdrawn from Bosnia. Bosnian Serbs agreed
to guarantee free movements of UNPROFOR troops shortly after
Akashi's threat. Serbs also agreeed to return stolen equipment and
to clear UN flights to Sarajevo airport.
Only UN aeroplanes carring UN troop members would be allowed
to fly to Sarajevo, according to the current agreement, Murphy
said.
He said he was hopeful that this was the first step towards
normalising air traffic in Sarajevo.
