BOSNIAN SERB FORCES TIGHTEN THEIR GRIP ON BIHAC POCKET

SARAJEVO, Dec 1 (Hina) - The Serb offensive against the Moslem- held Bihac pocket, western Bosnia, continued unabated despite UN calls for a ceasefire. The UN in Sarajevo today confirmed that Serb forces were conducting a three-prong offensive against the UN-designated Bihac safe zone and that the heaviest battles took place around the villages of Klokot, Vedro Polje, Zegar and Glavica, and on the Grabez plateau. UNPROFOR spokesman Jan-Dirk Von Merveldt said Serbs fired three artillery shells on central Bihac at around 4pm yesterday, killing a civilian. Another civilian was wounded by small arms fire near the town's hospital and Bangladeshi UN peace-keepers were shot at as they were trying to help him. Another UNPROFOR spokesman, Thant Myint, said that attacks on the Bihac pocket by both Bosnian Serb and Croatian Serb forces were in flagrant violation of international law. A UN commander in Bihac, Col. Lenieux, released a statement this morning saying that UN peace-keepers would continue their mission and would do all they could to protect the Bihac hospital. He added that UNPROFOR was deeply concerned about the current situation in the town. Lisa Jones, a spokeswoman for the International Committee of the Red Cross in Sarajevo, said there were at least a thousand wounded people in the Bihac hospital and another 600 were accommodated in private houses. She warned that the hospital ran out of food and medical supplies and that the Red Cross was helpless because rebel Serbs in occupied areas of neighbouring Croatia were obstructing humanitarian aid convoys for Bihac.
