BOSNIAN SERBS ALLOW UN CONVOYS TO RESUME TODAY

SARAJEVO, Oct 2 (Hina) - Bosnian Serbs gave permission for seven UN logistics convoys to pass to the UN Protection Force (UNPROFOR) deployed in different Serb-controlled areas of Bosnia, a spokeswoman for UNPROFOR, Claire Grimes, said at a press conference in Sarajevo on Sunday. The permission has been given for the reopening of land routes for UN logistics convoy as the result of Saturday's deal reached between Bosnian Serb leaders at Pale and the chief of UNPROFOR civilian affairs in former Yugoslavia, Sergio de Mello, and the UNPROFOR commander in Bosnia, General Michael Rose. In accordance with Saturday's agreement the Bosnian Serbs should allow the resumption of the UN logistics and humanitarian aid convoys commencing October 2 and, thus, end the anti-UN blockade that has lasted since a NATO air strike on a Serb tank near Sarajevo. The seven convoys are expected to set out to their destinations today, UNPROFOR spokeswoman said. Two of them were been halted on the route between Kiseljak and Sarajevo for several days. Another two convoys unsuccessfully tried to reach the UN-declared safe area of Srebrenica in the past days. No agreement had been won on reopening Sarajevo Airport, although the UN officials and the Bosnian Serb political and military leaders discussed this issue on Saturday. The negotiations on the problem should continue, and UN representatives were expecting that the a vital UN airlift to the Bosnian capital would restart as soon as possible, Spokeswoman Grimes said.
