SPLIT, Aug 7 (Hina) - The final part of a three-day traditional
tournament in the Croatian town of Sinj (the Split hinterland)
known as "Sinjska Alka" is to commence at 17:00 hrs today. The
tournament, in which lance-wielding horsemen dressed in traditional
outfits match their skills as they target a metal ring suspended
over a track, is held every year to mark the local inhabitants'
victory over the Ottoman Turks in 1715.
This year's 279th Sinjska Alka with 17 participants in the
final game is organized under sponsorship of Croatian President
Franjo Tudjman. His representative Defence Minister Gojko Susak
will present awards to the winners this evening.
