PROTESTS OF DISPLACED PERSONS START NEAR OSIJEK AND IN BIOGRAD

OSIJEK/BIOGRAD, July 1 (Hina) - Access of U.N.Protection Force (UNPROFOR) and U.N High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to the check-points at the Biljska road and at Nemetin near Osijek was thwarted on Friday morning. The action of hindering the movement of UNPROFOR and UNHCR at those points, organized by the community of displaced persons in Croatia, is aimed at diverting attention to the fact that the displaced persons have been denied of the right to home and peaceful life for three years. The community of the displaced persons underlines that protests are not against UNPROFOR members and soldiers but against the inefficacy of such a mandate of UNPROFOR. The displaced persons demand that the Vance plan and relevant U.N. resolutions be fully implemented. Their protests in various forms will last by 30 September when this mandate of UNPROFOR expires. The citizens of Biograd (southern Croatia) will join in the protest as well. From 14:00 hrs today they are going to impede traffic of all UNPROFOR vehicles along the Adriatic road toward Zadar and Sibenik. A committee on preparations of protest against UNPROFOR's inefficacy will organize a protest rally of Biograd's citizens at 17:30 hrs this afternoon in the town. The citizens of Biograd require from UNPROFOR to enable the town be provided with water supply from the Kakma water station, which is in the zone of separation. Biograd still suffers from the water shortage because the Serb terrorists had first turned off water form that station and then set an explosion on the water pipes in Kakma when they had to withdraw from the village. 011351 MET jul 94
