ZAGREB, June 6 (Hina) - Member of Croatian Parliament Drago Krpina
on Monday urged Prime Minister Valentic to put the "alarming"
shortage of water in the Biograd area (Dalmatia) on the agenda of
the next Government session.
Serb forces stationed in the UNPA South have cut the water
supplies from the Zrmanja River and a spring near the village of
Kakma (5 km N. of Biograd). Other sources on the free Croatian
territory are just enough to fill the main for 2 hours a week, and
the residents have to ship in water by sea.
Invoking the March 29 Agreement on the Cessation of
Hostilities in Croatia, which places the Kakma source in the
disengagement zone and thus under exclusive UNPROFOR control, MP
Kripina urged the Government to insist with UNPROFOR to ensure the
water supply to 40,000 citizens.
"Since what we are dealing here is an inhuman abuse of water
for military purposes, contrary to all international conventions,
the UN Security Council should be called upon to pronounce on this
problem," said MP Krpina in his letter to Premier Valentic.
