PRESIDENT IZETBEGOVIC RECEIVES US SENATORS

SARAJEVO, Jun 5 (Hina) - President of the Presidency of Bosnia- Herzegovina Alija Izetbegovic on Sunday met with a US congress delegation, consisting of Senators Robert Dole, Joseph Biden and John Worner. As Izetbegovic told a news conference after the talks, the Bosnian delegation will definitely not come to the negotiating table in Geneva until the Serbs have fully withdrawn from Gorazde. According to Izetbegovic, the Bosnian side is not setting any special conditions before the talks, but will insist on two points: that a cease-fire should not result in a freezing of the status quo on the ground and that Bosnia-Herzegovina must remain a state within its present borders, no matter what internal arrangement the sides agree upon. Speaking about Bosnian demands for the lifting of the arms embargo, Izetbegovic suggested that, it the lifting was not possible, the Serbian heavy artillery should be confiscated in deference to UN Security Council Resolution 752. "Our goal is to achieve a balance of powers in Bosnia- Herzegovina, and this is possible only if the Serbian heavy weaponry is confiscated. The present imbalance only prolongs the war, and peace will be reached as soon as it has been eliminated," Izetbegovic said. Senator Dole said the American delegation came to Sarajevo to express solidarity with the Bosnian people. "As a war veteran, I did not expect to see concentration camps and ethnic cleansing rear their ugly heads in Europe again," Dole said. Senator Worner said the US could not lift the arms embargo without consulting its allies. "Lifting the arms embargo on Bosnia would mean lifting the embargo on Croatia, too, and then it would be very difficult to prevent the Belgrade regime from getting new arms supplies," Warner said. Senator Biden said the NATO and UN should be more aggressive than they have been hitherto. The US delegation today also met with Bosnian Presidency member Stjepan Kljuic and Bosnian Deputy Prime Minister Edib Bukvic. 051634 MET jun 94
