AIRLIFT INTO BOSNIA-HERZEGOVINA STEPS UP

ZAGREB, Jan 6 (Hina) - The airlift into Bosnia-Herzegovina was stepped up last week at UNHCR's request, because of continued fighting, bad weather conditions and a growing number of isolated areas, UNPROFOR spokeswoman Shannon Boyd told reporters in Zagreb on Thursday. Last week 76 UN aircraft dropped 486 tonnes of food over Bosnian towns. According to an earlier agreement between Croatian Defence Council (HVO) commander Gen. Roso and UN commander in Bosnia Gen. Briquemont, a ferry service across the River Neretva at Bijela (on the Mostar-Sarajevo road) should have been introduced today. The low water level prevented the opening of the service, which is important for bringing relief aid to Sarajevo, said the spokeswoman. 061747 MET jan 94
