PAKRAC, May 8 (Hina) - "I have assured the people in Pakrac area
that Croatian army was about to withdraw from here as soon as
police started to operate regularly. The civilian authority would
take charge here just like anywhere else in Croatia," the stand-in
to Croatian Army chief-of-staff, General Zvonimir Cervenko, said
today, following his tour of Pakrac area.
Gen. Cervenko told the press that he wanted to inspect the
situation personally, relating particularly to "largely groundless
and inaccurate information of some dramatic developments in the
area."
"I had very straight talks with the UN officials and EU
monitors and we had together established the truth," Gen. Cervenko
said.
"The Croatian civilian authority started to work normally here
and I am informed that the situation was the same in the
surrounding villages throughout newly liberated Western Slavonia,"
he added.
