PAKRAC, May 5 (Hina) - Leaving Okucani, a Croatian government
delegation, headed by Prime Minister Nikica Valentic, went to
Jasenovac, where they visited the Roman Catholic church, damaged
during the Serbian aggression of 1991, and the memorial site of the
World War 2 concentration camp.
After Jasenovac, the delegation arrived in Pakrac visiting the
Gabrinica neighbourhood and the village of Japaga, liberated
yesterday.
"Today we can once more guarantee that the rule of law will be
established here," the Prime Minister said in front of the newly
opened police precinct in Japaga.
"We must realize that much fear and nervousness still exist
here. It's human," Valentic said, stressing that most of former
Serb militiamen subjected to interrogation, were to return to their
homes today, while only suspects of war crimes and other criminal
abuses would undergo further investigation.
"I personally believe this example will show that Serbs in
Croatia have good reasons to trust the Croatian government,"
Valentic said.
Asked when Croat refugees, expelled 1991, would return to
their homes. Valentic said it would take place as soon as possible.
"When they both (Serbs and Croats) return, it will be our
final victory," Valentic said, appealing for patience.
Commenting on allegations that Croatian police units had
violated international conventions, Interior Minister Ivan Jarnjak
said he had nothing to add to the plain fact that all reporters
could come to a hitherto occupied area and to see for themselves
that not one incident had occurred.
Asked what was currently happening to Serb former leaders,
Jarnjak said that some of them were returned to their communities
in order to convince people that they would be completely safe -
until they decide on whether to stay in Croatia or to leave.
Asked how many rebels were still offering resistance, Jarnjak
said that the action should be considered as finished.
