ZAGREB, Apr 1 (Hina) - Croatian army Chief-of-Staff, Gen. Janko
Bobetko, spoke of his visit to Bosnia-Herzegovina and the dramatic
crossing of Mt Vran, in a Croatian TV current affairs show last
night.
Returning from the central-Bosnian town of Travnik, where
he met his Bosnian counterpart Gen. Rasim Delic, Gen. Bobetko and
his associates were caught in a whirling snowstorm.
When it was clear that the blizzard made it impossible to
go forward, I ordered that UNPROFOR, which was in charge of
maintaining that section of the road, be informed, Bobetko said.
"After hours of waiting, UNPROFOR dispatched a ramshackle
snowmobile and I gave the order to go forward," Bobetko specified,
adding that he had refused UNPROFOR's offer to take him to their
base.
"I told them I would be the last to pull out," Bobetko
said.
He said five policemen died of carbon monoxyde poisoning
because a strong wind prevented the fumes from passing through the
exhaust pipe.
Bobetko said he and Rasim Delic had discussed the security
situation in the areas of the Bosnian Federation where Croat and
Moslem displaced people should return.
Asked about the military situation on the ground, Bobetko
said the Bosnian army was a "developed and quite organised" force.
"Let the aggressors take heed of this, because the time
when they used to beat first the one and then the other is
irretrievably past," Bobetko said.
Asked to comment on the new UN resolution, Bobetko said
Croatia had given sufficient proof of its willingness to achieve a
peaceful solution.
But Croatia had also taken a stand on its dignity - on
which it should build its future because "we see that they would
cut our borders in two hours, regardless of all our victims,"
Bobetko warned.
Bobetko dismissed certain "malicious speculations" in the
media about his retirement.
"I am not a pen-pusher and I don't ask for any benefits
from the Croatian people - I am prepared to walk on all fours until
Croatia is fully liberated," Bobetko said.
