FINAL DAY OF WORLD SUMMIT FOR SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT

COPENHAGEN, March 12 (Hina) - About 180 state delegations, which participate in the World Summit for Social Development in Copenhagen, will finish the conference today by adopting the Declaration and the Programme of Action. The draft Declaration obliges the participants in the world biggest conference in history, to commit themselves to creating the economic, political, social, cultural and law atmosphere which will enable nations to achieve social development. The Programme of Action obliges UN member-states and the whole international community to commit themselves to the goals of eradicating poverty and promoting employment as well as social integration. Croatian President Franjo Tudjman, leading the state delegation, addressed the final day of the world summit on poverty. In the address he reiterated several basic principles which serve as preconditions of the social development. The first of those principles is the upholding of the sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of States. The second of them is peace, and the third a just new international order, according to Tudjman's address. US Vice President Al Gore held also a speech at the UN Poverty Summit. The conference approved of Washington's decision on starting "Initiative For New Partnership", aimed at meeting needs of further social development in not developed countries. The Initiative envisaged that US Agency for International Development (USAID) should direct 40 per cent of its annual funds through non-governmental organizations so as to give incentives for small and middle firms abroad to make progress.
