JOINT PRESS CONFERENCE HELD BY TUDJMAN AND GORE

COPENHAGEN, March 12 (Hina) - Croatian President Franjo Tudjman and US Vice President Al Gore today held talks in Copenhagen. After the talks they held a joint press conference where they spoke of the impetus to a new UN Security Council mandate for Croatia. President Tudjman said the decision on the expiry of UNPROFOR's current mandate on 31 March 1995, remained in force. However, in line with its peace policies Croatia would accept further international presence on its territory, he added. "Croatia wanted to accelerate the peaceful solution because of the intolerable occupation of part of its territory. We wanted to contribute to stabilization of the circumstances, and, in cooperation with the United Nations, United States and other international factors we will confirm our contribution through the impetus to a new international mechanism," Tudjman stressed. At the press conference Tudjman read a statement on a new UN Security Council Mandate for an international presence in Croatia. The new mandate would consist of the international control of the Croatian borders with Bosnia-Herzegovina and the so-called Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (Serbia/Montenegro), the control of access and communications through the occupied areas of international humanitarian operations, and the facilitating of the implementation of the Ceasefire Agreement, the Economic Agreement and other agreements on the peaceful reintegration of the occupied areas into Croatia. US Vice President Al Gore described this position of Croatia as "wise", and announced intentions of his country to start relevant initiatives at the UN Security Council. Gore said there was agreement between all the Contact Group member states on such concept for the international presence. Tudjman and Gore revealed several details from the new mandate at the press conference . The international contingent for such a peacekeeping mission should consist of about 5,000 troops. It was not still known which countries might contribute troops to the new mandate. According to US diplomatic circles, US soldiers were not to be part of new international forces for Croatia. UN Security Council is expected to draw up a relevant resolution in the end of this month. Gore said he was glad that President Tudjman would visit Washington and talk with US President Bill Clinton this week. President Tudjman met UN Secretary-General Boutros Boutros Ghali and Danish Foreign Minister Niles Helvege Petersen this morning in Copenhagen. He talked with them about the situation in the former Yugoslavia. The talks focused particularly on the situation in Croatia and the new momentum of a peaceful solution to the crisis.
