UN PROPOSAL TO OPEN TURANJ POINT FOR ITS CONVOYS REJECTED

KARLOVAC, Jan 4 (Hina) - UNPA Sector North officials and Croatian Army and Police officials from Karlovac met in the town today. The meeting was held at the proposal of UNPROFOR who want a Turanj entry point to Zagreb to be opened to UNPROFOR convoys delivering food and fuel to blue helmets in occupied Croatian areas. Karlovac Police Superintendent, Dubravko Derk, said after the meeting that convoys could not pass the Turanj point as long as there were Moslem refugees from western Bosnia in this Karlovac suburb. According to a list drawn up by UNPROFOR there were 600 refugees, but it is believed that there could be up to 1000 at Turanj, who do not want to return home and are waiting for visas to third countries. The commander of the Croatian Army Karlovac district, Major- General Miljenko Crnjac, said UNPROFOR should ensure the return of Croatian displaced people to demilitarized zones, primarily to Turanj. UN officials were expected to make it possible for the Turanj residents, now expelled people, to visit their houses and property to determine the conditions under which they would remain after the departure of the western Bosnian refugees. Gen. Crnjac said UNPROFOR today confirmed that two Serb paramilitary units were patrolling the zone of separation. He added that rebel Serbs had violated the cease-fire at the disengagement line. The violations were also confirmed by UNPROFOR at a meeting today. UN officials today asked the Croatian Army to withdraw from several demilitarized zone positions. But Gen. Crnjac said they would only withdraw when Serbs withdrew their soldiers and heavy weapons from this zone. The meeting concentrated on the humanitarian situation in the villages with Croat inhabitants on the right bank of the Kupa River. Some 45 Croat families from the Brezani village had not received humanitarian aid for nine months. (hina) mar sd mms 041906 MET jan 95
