ZAGREB, Jan 3 (Hina) - Croatia's ambassador to the UN in Geneva
and President Tudjman's special envoy, Miomir Zuzul, yesterday
said Croatia would extend UNPROFOR's mandate only if it
implemented all UN Security Council resolutions.
Speaking in a Croatian television news programme late last
night, Zuzul said UNPROFOR could not contribute to a final
settlement without significant changes in the contents of its
mandate and the ways of implementing it.
He described the economic agreement between the Croatian
government and local Serb authorities in occupied areas as a
first but insufficient step towards resolving the crisis.
But Zuzul said if Croatia were given firm guarantees, if
traffic communications through Serb-held areas started being
restored, if the Adriatic oil pipeline opened and if UNPROFOR
started bringing life back to normal there, it would be
couterproductive for Croatia to insist on terminating the UN
mandate.
"But I say once again there's too little time left for us to
be optimistic that this could happen," Zuzul stressed.
Asked when Croatia could expect to be recognized within its
internationally accepted borders by the Yugoslav federation of
Serbia and Montenegro, Zuzul said this would happen when they
realized that the concept of a greater Serbia was impossible to
realize at Croatia's expense.
