NEW YEAR SHOOTING INCIDENTS IN ZAGREB

ZAGREB, Jan 2 (Hina) - Shooting incidents on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, compared to the same period last year, were less frequent and resulted in less intense consequences. Christmas was even relatively quiet, Zagreb police told a press a conference today. During the Christmas and New Year holidays in Zagreb between December 24 and January 1, firecracker explosions injured seven people, gun shots wounded three and bullets fired nowhere in particular, hit two people. A Zagreb woman died in a traffic accident. Between December 30 and January 1, 146 traffic incidents were reported, in which 33 people were injured. Bullets flew through 15 houses and apartments (compared to 51 in '93/'94 period). People responsible for five of the shootings are likely to be fined because they fired at houses whose occupants were still inside. Ten cars were damaged this year compared to 19 in the '93-'94 period. Croatian television carried a brief advertisement in the last fortnight of December asking its citizens to take care during the holiday period and reminding them of '93-'94 incidents.
