During the aggression against Croatia, Kis said, we witnessed
the aggressor's violations of the basic human right, the right to
life, freedom and personal safety, which is the basis for all other
human rights. We witnessed the expulsion of millions of people, the
killing and wounding of thousands of people, including elderly
people, women and children as well as the aggressor's attempts to
destroy not only our present but our past as well, Kis said.
He also said he hoped that this is the last Human Rights Day
which the displaced from eastern Slavonia, western Srijem and
Baranja will spend away from their homes.
Croatia managed to show resistance to the aggressor and build
its own legal system, in line with highest standards of
international law, although there were some 'wrong steps' in
practice. Europe had acknowledged that, recognizing Croatia as a
member of the Council of Europe, Kis said.
Kis wished all Croatian citizens a 'peaceful life and respect
for all human rights in the sovereign, democratic and integral
Croatia'.
