PRESIDENT TUDJMAN VISITS UN-ADMINISTERED EASTERN CROATIA

VUKOVAR, Dec 3 (Hina) - Croatian President Franjo Tudjman, accompanied by government and parliament officials, on Tuesday visited the UN-administered region of eastern Croatia and the Danuber river town of Vukovar. Before meeting UN Transitional Administrator Jacques Klein, Tudjman toured Vukovar, including the mass grave site at Ovcara where executed patients from the Vukovar hospital had been buried after Yugoslav army and Serb paramilitary forces occupied the town five years ago. Klein informed the President about the progress of the peaceful reintegration of the region into Croatia's administrative system. Tudjman expressed satisfaction with Tuesday's deployment of transitional customs officials, including Croatian representatives, at Croatia's border with Yugoslavia and with the opening of Croatian government offices in Vukovar and Beli Manastir for establishment of Croatian authority in the region. During the tour of villages which the UN Transitional Administration handed over to Croatian authorities on November 1, Reconstruction and Development Minister Jure Radic, member of Parliament Djuro Perica and head of the Nijemci municipality Ivica Klem informed the President about the reconstruction of the villages to which Croatian displaced people were expected to return before Christmas. The president of the supervisory board of the INA oil company, Hrvoje Sarinic and INA director general Andrija Kojakovic informed Tudjman during a visit to Djeletovci that this largest oil field in this part of Europe had been returned to INA. Other officials accompanying the President included Deputy Prime Minister Ivica Kostovic, Parliament vice president Jadranka Kosor, Interior Minister Ivan Jarnjak, Deputy Presidential Chief of Staff Vesna Skare-Ozbolt, member of Parliament Count Jakob Eltz of Vukovar, head of the government office for the region Ivica Vrkic, his deputy Mirko Tankosic, Vukovar County prefect Vlado Osust and Vukovar mayor Vladimir Stengl.
