President of the European Human Rights Court, Rolf Ryssdal,
outlined the functioning and structure of the Court. Now that
Croatia has been admitted to the Council of Europe, a Croatian
judge will also join the panel of judges, Ryssdal said.
Crnic announced that the Croatian Parliament would soon ratify
the European Convention on Human Rights.
"The Ratification of the European Convention and the
acknowledgement of the jurisdiction of the European Court will
strengthen human rights in Croatia," Crnic said.
Ryssdal noted that the Convention made it possible to victims
of human rights violations to bring lawsuits before the European
Court. However, plaintiffs must have explored all the legal
avenues in their native country.
