CROATIA TO BE FORMALLY ADMITTED TO COUNCIL OF EUROPE TODAY

STRASBOURG, Nov 6 (Hina) - Croatian Foreign Minister Mate Granic met the president of the Council of Europe's Parliamentary Assembly, Leni Fischer, in Strasbourg on Wednesday ahead of the formal proclamation of Croatia as the 40th member of the Council of Europe. Granic told reporters before the meeting that Croatia wanted to be an active partner within the Council of Europe, respecting the principal values on which the oldest European political organization was based. Croatia sought Council of Europe membership in September 1992. The admission procedure was frozen in 1993 and 1994 over the Croat- Moslem conflict in Bosnia-Herzegovina and in 1995 over Croatian military operations which liberated Serb-occupied areas in Croatia. On April 24, 1996 the Parliamentary Assembly recommended to the Committee of Ministers to invite Croatia to full membership. On July 2 the Committee issued an invitation for delayed admission and on October 16 it decided to formally admit Croatia on November 6. (hina) vm jn 061228 MET nov 96
