ANTUNOVAC, Oct 10 (Hina) - Croatian reporters on Thursday visited
the eastern Croatian village of Antunovac, accompanied by the
President's envoy at the Government's Temporary Administration
Office for the establishment of Croatian authority in Eastern
Slavonia, Baranja and Western Srijem, Major General Slavko Baric.
Antunovac is since 1 October being cleared of mines, a process
which should end by 15 November, Baric said.
The mine-clearing is being performed by some 100 persons and
so far they cleared the cemetery, the elementary school and 50
houses, Baric said and added that other 100 workers would arrive to
help with the clearing, so that reconstruction could begin.
Ernestinovo, a village also included in the return pilot-
project is also being cleared of mines.
This is the first time reporters visit Antunovac since its
occupation in 1991, when it had 2,900 inhabitants. There are only
50 today.
Spokesman for the Zagreb Office of the UN Commission for
Refugees Alemka Lisinski also took part in today's visit.
700 houses in Antunovac had been destroyed, she said, adding
that most of the money for the reconstruction had been provided by
international non-government organizations. USD 200,000 had been
provided by a Norwegian association for the aid to refugees for the
reconstruction of the elementary school, USD 2 million had been
provided by the World Lutheran Organization to repair 400 houses,
Lisinski said.
She pointed out that the Croatian Government would have to
take part in the reconstruction of the remaining houses.
UNHCR provided USD 5 million during three months of the return
pilot-project, Lisinski said.
Before the war, Antunovac was a rich village inhabited mainly
by Croats. Today the houses are destroyed, it is evident that
everything has been looted and taken away. Croatian reporters also
saw two unburied bodies just thrown into a grave.
