U.N. DRUG CONTROL MISSION CONCLUDES VISIT TO CROATIA

ZAGREB, Sept 21 (Hina) - A UN Drug Control and Prevention (UNDCP) mission said at the end of a visit to Croatia on Saturday it would help the country draw up drug control legislation and train drug law-enforcement officers and would partially finance the purchase of special equipment for police and customs. "UN experts have concluded that Croatia has good foundations for the fight against narcotics because it has been dealing with this problem for quite a while and has had positive experience in drug prevention," the head of the Croatian government commission for drug abuse prevention, Slavko Sakoman, said after talks with the UN delegation. The aim of the six-day visit was to assess the current situation and progress made by Croatian authorities in the fight against drug abuse and to draw up a programme of assistance to Croatia in this field. UNDCP experts held talks with representatives of the customs administration and the ministries of internal affairs, justice, finance, education and sport, health and labour and social welfare. They visited Rijeka, Split and the Bajakovo border crossing towards Yugoslavia. (hina) vm 211521 MET sep 96
