The Croatian government had agreed to assist in monthly
payments for the next six months which would enable the peaceful
reintegration to continue, it would enable the regional
administration employees to be paid and there would be enough money
for operative expenses," UN Administrator Jacques Klein said after
the signing.
This was a very positive step by the Croatian government and
by doing this, they had shown the people in the region that they
were serious, Klein added.
Head of the Croatian government Office for the Temporary
Administration for Peaceful Reintegration of the Croatian Danubian
area, Ivica Vrkic, who had signed the agreement on behalf of
Croatia, said that the agreement on the co-financing of the
Transitional Administration and public services strengthened the
UNTAES, which enabled the entrance of Croatian authority in the
area, the introduction of the kuna as means of payment and it
created conditions for the return of all displaced persons to their
homes.
The Croatian government issued a statement after the signing
of the agreement which said that the agreement had been signed "to
speed up the process of reintegration and to conclude it before the
expiry of the mandate on January 15 1997".
General Klein expressed satisfaction with the results of talks
between Croatian and Serbian presidents in Athens, stressing that
the Resolution on the peaceful solution in eastern Slavonia was the
key part in the process of mutual recognition of the two countries.
