WASHINGTON, July 30 (Hina) - The U.N. Security Council on Tuesday
extended the mandate of U.N. military monitors in the Croatian
Danubian area until 15 January 1997.
The mandate for 100 military monitors ending on 30 July 1996
was extended for six months, within UNTAES, with a technical
resolution 1069.
U.N. Secretary General Butros Gali forwarded a report on the
implementation of the UNTAES mandate to the Security Council,
saying that it was necessary for military monitors to remain in
order to strengthen UNTAES in following the situation after the end
of demilitarization in eastern Slavonia, Baranja and western Srijem
and in ensuring that peace and security in the region be followed.
The U.N. Secretariat estimated that the stay of military
monitors will add new costs in the amount of USD 1.9 million.
