SARAJEVO, Aug 7 (Hina) - IFOR ground forces commander General
Michael Walker on Wednesday said that his soldiers would do
everything to ensure that the September elections in Bosnia pass in
full peace and safety. #L#
Walker told a news conference at IFOR headquarters near
Bijeljina in eastern Bosnia that he was most concerned with the
possibility that uncontrolled groups of people could attempt to
prevent the arrival of voters from the other entity on the day of
elections, which could lead to incidents.
According to the present mandate, IFOR has the authority to
keep in detention any person disturbing order and security for 72
hours.
Walker refused to comment on the measures planned in case of
riots, but he did not refute the possibility, although he warned
that his soldiers would not become police.
Commenting the recent discovery of large amounts of ammunition
on Mount Romanija which the Bosnian Serbs had not reported to IFOR,
Walker said that the ammunition had been put under NATO control and
would most probably be confiscated.
