"Croatia has a special place within the family of European
countries, which is based on its long history and numerous
contributions to the common European tradition", de Barros said
while presenting the credentials.
President Tudjman said that Croatia was coming back to the
European union of states, where it belonged.
Pointing out the historical and geographical similarities
between Croatia and Portugal, which are both maritime and European
countries, Tudjman said that the development of relations between
the two countries should be based on history but directed towards
the future, towards the establishment of democracy and freedom and
mutual cooperation.
Tudjman promised de Barros that both the Croatian government
and he himself would fully support him during his office.
