War Graves on Saturday organised the consecration of German war
graves at the central Zagreb cemetery of Mirogoj. #L#
The consecration ceremony was opened by the head of the
Parliament Committee for the establishment of war and post-war
crimes, Kazimir Sviben.
German Ambassador to Croatia, Horst Weisel, who attended the
ceremony, said that Croatia, by allowing the burial of foreign
soldiers on its territory, 'has reached European standards as
regards this issue'.
After a service, which was held in Croatian and German by
Vladimir Deutch, the bishop of the Evangelical church in Croatia,
the graves of German soldiers were consecrated.
A commemorative speech was held by Hans Engel, representative
of the German Association for Maintenance of War Graves.
The consecration of graves was ended with a wreaths-laying
ceremony. The total of 2,083 German Wehrmacht soldiers had been
buried at Mirogoj.
