OGATA: JAJCE IS A PROOF THAT PILOT PROJECT FOR RETURN OF DPS CAN S

CAN S $ UCCEED JAJCE, 7 May (Hina) - "Jajce is a proof that the Dayton pilot programme for the return of DPs can be successfully implemented. Jajce is a reason why the international community is so interested in the area and willing to back its reconstruction," said UN High Commissioner for Refugees Sadako Ogata during her visit to Jajce Tuesday afternoon. During the visit, Mrs. Ogata talked with Nikola Bilic, head of the Jajce municipality, Ivan Saric, prefect of the Sredisnjobosanska county and with Josip Silic, officer of the BH Federation army. Mr. Bilic told the extinguished guest that so far 10,500 Croats and 900 Muslims have returned to their homes in Jajce, with 10,000 Croats and 13,000 Muslims still waiting for repatriation. "Key obstacle to a faster return of all DPs is absence of substantial international aid for repair of their homes, and all demagogic insinuations that present the situation in a different light can be discarded as irrelevant," said Bilic, adding that the little aid that is arriving to Jajce is used solely for the repair of houses belonging to Muslim returnees. "One should not forget that both Croats and Muslims have been expelled from Jajce and are now returning home. Hence, aid should also be distributed equally," stressed Bilic. High Commissioner Ogata promised she would raise the issue with the UN and with financial institutions. After officials talks, Mrs. Ogata's hosts took her on the tour of the town. She talked with several Muslim families that have returned to their repaired homes. (Hina) mr 072300 MET may 96
