BRTONIGLA, May 5 (Hina) - An agreement on establishing an Embassy
of Local Democracy in Brtonigla near Novigrad, in the
northwestern Croatian region of Istria, was signed on Sunday.
The signing ceremony was attended by the president of local
and regional governments of the Council of Europe, Rinaldo
Locatelli, Croatian government minister Branko Mocibob, Mladen
Andrlic of the Croatian Foreign Ministry, representatives of six
Italian municipalities and the Swiss town of Bellinzone,
representatives of Swiss and Italian non-governmental
organizations and Istrian County prefect Luciano Delbianco.
The ceremony was addressed by the head of Brtonigla
municipality, Tullio Fernetich, who said: "We wanted the Embassy
of Local Democracy because we believe in human rights, the rights
of ethnic minorities, cross-border cooperation, and particularly
peace and democracy."
Speaking on behalf of the Croatian government and Prime
Minister Zlatko Matesa, Mocibob said that the establishment of
closer ties with European integrations and Croatia's active role
in Europe were priorities of Croatian development.
