President Tudjman said that the many similarities between
Croats and Irish were a strong basis for cooperation between the
two countries.
Special attention was paid to integration processes in
Europe and the role and position of Croatia and Ireland in them.
Tudjman reiterated Croatia's refusal to be part of any
associations that would distance it further from Europe, because
Croatia had always belonged there.
He stressed the mutual belief in the strengthening of the
cooperation between the two countries, both bilateral and with the
European Union, which Ireland would preside in the second half of
this year.
Other members of the Irish delegation present at the
meeting were Irish Ambassador to Croatia Bernard Davenport and
Michell's secretary Peadar Carpenter.
Croatian representatives present at the meeting, besides
President Tudjman, were Croatian Foreign Minister Mate Granic, head
of the President's Office Ivo Sanader, the President's Foreign
Affairs Advisor Zeljko Matic and Croatian Ambassador to Great
Britain Ante Cicin-Sain.
