ZAGREB, March 27 (Hina) - The key to the solution of the missing
and detained persons issue is information, and in order to obtain
it, I visited this area twice in the past two weeks, said an
International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) U.S. special envoy
for missing persons' issues, Mark Steinberg, in Zagreb on
Wednesday. #L#
Before he was to leave for Belgrade to obtain new information,
he would meet families of missing persons in Zagreb, Steinberg said
after talks with Croatian Deputy Prime Minister Ivica Kostovic.
"It was a working meeting aimed at Steinberg leaving for
Belgrade with new information and inducing those responsible to
cooperate," Kostovic said after the meeting.
He stressed that Croatia was satisfied with the fact that the
United States had assigned their special envoy and thus initiated
further diplomatic efforts which should, along with those of the
ICRC, a special expert on missing persons with the UN Commission
for Human Rights, Manfred Nowak, and Croatian diplomacy, help to
resolve the problem.
There were two basic conditions for a long-term peace in the
region, "seeking justice for committed crimes and the release of
all detainees" which were reasons the U.S. had appointed a
representative in charge of detainees' and missing persons' issues,
said the U.S. Ambassador to Croatia, Peter Galbraith, who was also
present at the meeting.
