A BRIEF LOOK AT CROATIAN PRESS ON FRIDAY

ZAGREB, March 22 (Hina) - The Friday edition of the Zagreb-based daily VJESNIK runs a front-page article on talks between the visiting US ambassador to the UN, Madeleine Albright, and Croatian President Franjo Tudjman, under the headline "Demilitarization of Danube River Area To Be Stepped Up." Vjesnik includes an article on a government session which presented three draft bills to curb the grey economy and results of international bids for construction of ten motorways in Croatia. In coverage of a Zagreb City Assembly session, Vjesnik reports that Drazen Budisa was elected mayor of Zagreb and that Zdravko Tomac remained president of the Assembly. "Witnesses Expand Indictment" is the headline of a Vjesnik article on a court hearing of three Yugoslav army officers suspected by the International War Crimes Tribunal in The Hague of committing massacres in the eastern Croatian town of Vukovar. Vjesnik devotes its central two pages to the situation in the Bugojno area of central Bosnia, under the headline "A Crescent Above Croatian Hearth." Another Zagreb-based daily, VECERNJI LIST, runs a front-page headline "Rocks and Eggs at M. Albright and J. Klein" on the US ambassador's visit to the Serb-occupied Eastern Slavonia area of eastern Croatia. "Croatian Police on Border with Serbia" is the headline of a Vecernji List article on a recent agreement between Croatia and Serbian-led Yugoslavia on opening the motorway, railway and oil pipeline.
