Asked about condition of work for the Foundation in countries
in transition, Soros said that the conditions were being changed
and that in the "Federal Republic of Yugoslavia
(Serbia/Montenegro)" the situation was worst at the moment, where
the Foundation was not allowed to work. He added that local staff
had initiated legal action against the ban imposed by the
"Yugoslav" authorities, and staffers were going to work in hope of
getting allowance.
Soros said that conditions for the work of the Foundation were
being improved in Croatia, but he added they were not favourable,
as there were no possibilities for cooperation with official
structures, particularly with ministries of education and science.
Speaking about Bosnia-Herzegovina, Soros said it would be very
important to establish independent electronic media before next
elections, and this was one of topics at recent world economic
forum in Davos.
