PRISTINA, Jan 27 (Hina) - An inmate died in a Kosovo prison,
Kosovo's human rights committee said Saturday, adding that
authorities failed to provide any explanation of the death. #L#
Islam Provoliu, 65, died in the prison at Istog, Kosovo, after
only four days inside, the committee said. #L#
Provoliu was sentenced to year and a half for illegal
possession of arms and entered the prison on last Monday. He was
the second Kosovo's ethnic Albanian to die in prison over the past
week, while the authority failed both times to issue any statement
explaining the cause of death.
Several hundred of Albanians were currently held in prisons,
all charged for illegal possession of arms, the committee said,
adding the charges were apparently just an alibi.
The committee stressed that a total of around 12,000 Kosovo
Albanians have been "treated by the police" over past year. Basic
human rights were violated in around 27,000 individual cases.
