There were 1500 mine fields that were being cleared and a
joint monitoring commission was taking part as well. Many of those
fields had not been marked and representatives of the three sides
in Bosnia could not provide IFOR with information about them,
Gaylord said.
U.S. soldiers would be accommodated in 11 to 12 bases in
Sector North-East. What was certain so far was that the U.S. army
1st Brigade would be accommodated in Donja Kladusa, near the
Loncari-Gradacac road, in the northern part of the sector, Gaylord
said, adding the operation was going on without any difficulties.
The planes were landing at the Dubrave airport every day and
the Sava pontoon bridge would be opened for traffic only during the
day, the IFOR official said.
Gaylord added that he was satisfied with the cooperation
between IFOR and Croatian authorities, especially in the
construction of the pontoon bridge.
The U.S. Defence Minister William Perry and the head of the
U.S. army Joint Headquarters, General John Shalikashvili would
arrive in Tuzla tomorrow, Gaylord said.
