ZAGREB, Nov 29 (Hina) - Representatives of the Croatian national
minority in Austria, the Czech Republic, Italy, Yugoslavia,
Hungary, Rumania and Slovakia, held the 2nd Croatian Minorities'
Forum '97 in Zagreb.
The forum focused on the role of Croatian minority media in the life
of Croatian minorities, the status of minorities and problems they
face.
Participating in the forum were heads of media of autohtonous
minorities in these countries, Croatian Parliament, ministries'
and non-government organisations' representatives.
Participants were addressed by deputy Parliament speaker, Zarko
Domljan.
The issue of minorities is a crucial issue in Europe, Domljan said,
adding that minorities in Croatia had a wide spectre of rights,
advocating the same rights for Croatian minorities in neighbouring
countries.
Deputy Foreign Minister Ivo Sanader said that the care for Croats
living outside of Croatian borders was one of the main concerns of
Croatian foreign politics.
He recalled an agreement with Hungary which has often been pointed
out in international discussions as a model for resolving the
rights of minorities in this part of Europe.
Croatia pays special attention to the issue of protection of the
rights of Croats living in Yugoslavia, Sanader said, adding that
there were certain indications that the Yugoslav side might be
ready to begin negotiations on a bilateral agreement on the
protection of minorities.
Representatives of Croatian minorities spoke in general about
their position, stressing that the younger generation spoke
Croatian less and less, which was the result of assimilation.
A Croat representative from Serbia read a report by the president of
the Democratic Union of Vojvodina Croats, Bela Tonkovic, who had
not arrived at the forum due to problems with his visa.
Tonkovic stressed in his report that the signing of the agreement on
the protection of minorities between Croatia and Yugoslavia would
be very significant for Croats in Yugoslavia.
