ZAGREB, 4 Nov (Hina) - The Croatian Government has drawn up a
detailed report on its two-year work, with basic program activities
and projections until the end of 1997. The report is to be submitted
at a Government's formal session, to be held on Friday under the
chairmanship of the President of the Republic, Franjo Tudjman.
The 200-page report on the work of Premier Zlatko Matesa's
Government from November 1995 to October this year describes in
detail the activities of the Government in individual segments and
ministries.
The basic evaluation is that in achieving its primary interests the
Government was visibly successful in the past two years.
As early as autumn 1995, it could be established that Croatia was
entering a period of consolidation of its international position.
Croatia's aim was and is the stabilisation of its international
environment, as a precondition and basis for its reconstruction and
economic prosperity. Creating a new political reality Croatia has
become an effective factor and reliable partner of the
international community in solving the long-lasting crisis in the
region.
Along with its first clear aim - the complete integration of the
whole of Croatia's territory and all its citizens - the Government
has set another one - its active participation in the final solution
of the Bosnian crisis with full protection of the local Croat
population by securing its constitutional equality - as well as a
third aim - the normalisation of relations with its immediate
neighbours. In achieving all three primary goals the Government was
visibly successful, the report says.
The report also stresses that the basic macroeconomic
characteristic in the last two years is stable economic growth,
accompanied by a low inflation rate, stable exchange rate and
relatively stable interest rates.
The revival of economic activities, which started in 1994, has
resulted in stable economic growth in 1996 and 1997.
A quarterly report on gross national product in permanent prices
shows that the GNP has been constantly increasing since 1994.
During the two-year period, economic activity has also registered
considerable growth and this year's growth rate could be at around
7%.
The Government report also tackles the process of reconstruction
and development, in particular the liberated areas, banking
system, international financial relations, ownership
transformation and privatisation, and financial rehabilitation
measures.
Along with economic measures the report also describes the
activities of the Government in securing the rights of Homeland war
soldiers and members of their families, social security and care
and return and immigration of Croats.
In the past two years the Government held 114 sessions, 79 of them
open. Parliament has adopted 246 laws and the Government has
adopted 246 regulations and 1,058 decisions.
