On behalf of the Croatian people and him personally, Stambuk
expressed his deepest grief at the departure of Mother Theresa, and
called her the "Mother of all people, the saviour of the forsaken
and unloved, the cherisher of the sick and the dying".
He recalled his meetings with Mother Theresa with whom he had
spoken in Croatian and shared moments of prayer, and expressed hope
that the sisters of her order would, with God's help, continue with
her merciful work with which she had marked our century.
Mother Theresa was awarded a high Croatian order of the Queen
Jelena, for her contribution to the humanitarian and spiritual
field, on her 85th birthday, by the Croatian President, Franjo
Tudjman in 1995.
In August 1995, Mother Theresa received Croatian citizenship,
as a Croatian representative for humanitarian help, when Stambuk
presented her with a Croatian diplomatic passport.
