OSIJEK, Aug 12 (Hina) - Mayor of Osijek Zlatko Kramaric on Tuesday
received Greg Starosky, a representative of the Department for the East of
the National Democratic Institute for International Relations from
Washington.
The Institute proclaimed Kramaric one of this year's winners of the
"W. Averell Harriman" award which the Institute awards to individuals in and
outside the United States who "demonstrate commitment to democracy and
human rights."
According to Starosky, the award would be officially given in
November. Other foreign winners of the award were Selim Beslagic, the
Mayor of Tuzla, and Vesna Pesic, the president of the Serbian Civic
Association, he added.
Expressing gratitude for the award, Kramaric said it was an
acknowledgement to him personally, but also to residents of Osijek who, as
he said, "despite the time, realized that democracy has no alternative."
