Present at the meeting was the International Police Task Force (IPTF) commander for Mostar, Berthold Hubegger. Beckroft said an agreement had been signed about the deployment of police officers in the canton, which, he added, removed the last obstacle to the establishment of canton police.
CKROFT MOSTAR, July 16 (Hina) - The US Embassy's Charge d'Affaires in Sarajevo, Robert Beckroft, on Wednesday visited Mostar where he met the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton Prefect, Fatima Leho, and her deputy Pero Markovic. Present at the meeting was the International Police Task Force (IPTF) commander for Mostar, Berthold Hubegger. Beckroft said an agreement had been signed about the deployment of police officers in the canton, which, he added, removed the last obstacle to the establishment of canton police. #L# This agreement called for the creation of identification cards which the police would be wearing, and our goal was to deploy the police on the streets as soon as possible. Beckroft expressed hope that the deployment would be completed by next Monday at the latest, and it was possible, he said, that this could happen earlier. He held that Mostar and the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton now exited a period during which they had been labelled by a negative image. From now, we could view Mostar as a model for other cantons within the Bosnian Federation, he stressed. Markovic said that the agreement concerned what had already been adopted by the Canton Assembly, police identification cards. Leho said this agreement was a "technicality".
