ILOK, 1 July (Hina) - The administration for protection of natural and cultural heritage in Osijek has prepared documentation for the assessment of war damage done to 221 listed cultural monuments in the Croatian Danube river region.
The U.N. Transitional Administration in Eastern Slavonia (UNTAES) should create security conditions as soon as possible so that the task could be carried out, Culture Minister Bozo Biskupic said at a session of the Vukovar Headquarters for the Reconstruction of Cultural Monuments, held in Ilok Tuesday.

assessment of war damage done to 221 listed cultural monuments in the

The 221 cultural monuments include 39 monuments in Vukovar, 88 in
U.N.-administered areas of Vukovar-Srijem County and 94 listed monuments
in U.N.-administered parts of Osijek-Baranja County, Biskupic said.
The reconstruction of cultural monuments in Vukovar would last 10
to 20 years, but there were monuments which could be repaired for a
short period of time and they should be registered, said Matija Salaj,
head of the Institute for Urban Planning in the Ministry of Urban
Planning, Construction and Housing.
Vukovar would not be completely reconstructed, but 'we will try and
preserve the basic locations the city is recognised by', Salaj said.
Some 20 counties have replied to President Tudjman's initiative to
each reconstruct one building in Vukovar.
