PARIS, 17 June (Hina) - The Director-General of the United Nations
Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), Federico
Mayor, on Tuesday expressed "the Organisation's concern about continuing
violence in the Federation of Bosnia-Herzegovina where buildings of
different religious communities have been deliberately targeted and
seriously damaged," a statement released in Paris on Tuesday said. #L#
"Every shot targeting cultural and religious monuments in Bosnia-
Herzegovina, over and above material damage, constitutes an attack
against the principle of a multicultural society which is at the heart
of the Bosnian State. The Dayton Peace Agreement, signed in November
1995, has produced concrete results but the road ahead is still long and
paved with obstacles. Particular concern is felt about cultural and
sacred monuments, the country's most valuable treasures which link its
past, present and future," the statement said.
Mayor appealed to all the parties concerned to ensure that criminal
acts do not recur, "harming as they do the very foundations of both the
present and the future".
He also called on the international community to give itself the
necessary means for the full implementation of the Dayton agreement.
"UNESCO for its part will continue to provide full support for the
implementation of Annex 8 of the Agreement which establishes the
Commission for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage for which the
Organisation is directly responsible."
