On behalf of Croatian Forests, the Agreement was signed by
Assistant Director Josip Papp, on behalf of UNTAES, deputy UN
Transitional Administrator, Souren Seraydarian, and on behalf of the
local Serbs, president of the Eastern Slavonia, Baranja and Western
Srijem Joint Municipal Council, Milos Vojnovic.
Expressing satisfaction with the successful reintegration of the
forest management authority, Papp recalled that forests in the Danubian
area lay on 50,000 hectares.
Croatian Forests experts are immediately to inspect the woods, as
there were indications that more trees than had been planned had been
felled down, Papp said, adding that Croatian Forests would restore the
forests in the Danube river region to their pre-war condition in several
years.
Speaking about the personnel working in forestry companies in the
Danubian area, Papp said that 386 of them had signed employment
contracts with Croatian Forests. He called on them to, together with
their Croat colleagues, contribute to improving Croatian forests and
guaranteed them equality.
The reintegration of forests was another step in the reintegration
of institutions, and we hope that the reintegration of people would also
be accelerated, Seraydarian said, adding that Croatian Forests would put
a stop to the devastation of the environment and uncontrolled
exploitation of wood in the Danube river region, as well as to introduce
order in the felling and export of trees.
Present at the signing was also Croatian Prime Minister's advisor,
Ivan Majdak.
