ZAGREB, 25 June (Hina) - The State Commission for the Croatian Danube
river region on Wednesday held a session which was chaired by Vice
Premier Jure Radic. The Commission discussed the course of peaceful
reintegration of the Danube river region in the areas of justice, labour
and social care and education and health system, a statement from the
Reconstruction and Development Ministry said. #L#
Justice Minister Miroslav Separovic gave an account of the course
of introduction of the Croatian legal system in the Danube river region,
which officially started on June 1.
Once job competition is over, the Justice Ministry will appoint
judges in the region. The introduction of the Croatian legal system in
the region is expected to end by 1 August.
Labour and Social Care Minister Joso Skara said that 10,039 persons
from the Danube river region had submitted requests for the exercise of
pension and disability insurance rights so far. Out of that number,
7,413 cases had been solved positively and the applicants were receiving
pension allowances, Skara said.
Representatives of the Education Ministry said that classes in the
Croatian Danube river region could start at the same time as elsewhere
in Croatia.
There were still many problems in the health system and it was
necessary to see that they be solved as soon as possible, the statement
said.
The Commission was also informed about the number of requests for
the two-way return of refugees and displaced people. The Office for
Displaced Persons and Refugees has so far received requests by 5,839
families from the Croatian Danube river region who want to change their
place of residence. Out of that number, 2,745 families (5,919 persons)
expressed desire to leave the Danube river region and return to their
homes in other parts of Croatia, while the rest said they wanted to sell
their property and leave Croatia for other countries.
The Agency for Real Estate Trade, founded by the Government, will
solve its first hundred requests next week.
In the meantime, U.N. Transitional Administration in Eastern
Slavonia received 2,805 requests of Croat displaced people for immediate
return to the Danube river region. The requests were submitted on two
bases - family reunion and ownership of houses which are not damaged and
which are empty.
Another 10,000 similar requests will be submitted in the next
several days.
The Commission also considered the information on the status of
border crossings which will be taken over by the Croatian customs
authorities on 30 June. So far, Croatia and the Federal Republic of
Yugoslavia have signed agreements on eight road, two railway and three
local border crossings in the northern sector of the border.
Some differences still remain - in the treatment of the depth of
the local border zone, the duration of stay of foreigners in the zone
and kinds of goods which can be carried over the border.
As of 1 July, new police superintendents in the Danube river region
will be appointed. The appointment will be in line with the 1991 census,
1997 election results and the Croatian Government Letter of Intent.
So far, some 2,400 vehicles have been registered in line with
Croatian regulations and around 2,000 driver licenses have been issued
in the Danube river region.
